Four seasons in one day

Image
For 20 years, I lived “down South” in Sussex and spent a big chunk of that time commuting in and out of London. And honestly? I’d forgotten what proper seasons felt like. Down there, the weather mostly came in three flavours: warm, rainy, or terribly warm. Snow happened, frosts too, but those were rare events. Meanwhile, my family in the Midlands would mention scraping ice off windscreens or waking up to a proper blanket of snow, while I was looking out at yet another grey-but-mild Sussex morning. Now that I’m back in the Midlands, with a garden and green views, I notice the seasons again. Sussex and London may have been warmer, but it was bland by comparison, the weather here, even with climate change, still reflects the passing of the seasons.

My cars, past & present

Growing up, we were a no car household, not until I purchased my first car (a 1981 1.3 Austin Allegro, HLS mark 3). I don’t think my children appreciate having a family car and generally roll their eyes when I regale them with my ‘when I were a lad’ humble origin stories. Should they ever take an interest, I thought it would be nice to collate pictures of all the vehicles I’ve had the good fortune to own, where these images exist. My second car was a Ford Sierra, I purchased this from the father of a local friend, where she still has some grainy images of the car. Using the power of AI, I was able to get the images enhanced and the missing car digitally rear reconstructed. For some tasks like this AI is remarkable. For the growing gallery of my old cars, see My cars, past & present .

What’s this all about?

What’s the purpose of this site? In 1996, after a night of enjoying the courtesy of the University’s ‘Mandela’ bar and a day of classes where we were introduced to HTML, a bunch of us decided to check if the UK domains aligned to our surnames were available. With the magic of an old 486DX running Windows 95, on the University network, we quickly discovered only one was available, my own and I quickly registered it. So, for the cost of a heavily subsidised pint of beer, I registered my domain (this one) and promptly did nothing with it. For years, apart from sporadic updates, the site mostly collected digital dust while I dutifully paid the renewal fee. Now, I’m revamping the site to finally give my corner of the internet a little attention.
